Sultan Kosen - The World's Tallest Man at 8'1"

Turkish Sultan Kosen has been officially recognized as the world's tallest man by Guinness World Records, after measuring in at 8ft 1in (2.47 meter).

Kosen, 26, also holds the record for the largest hands (10.8in) and biggest feet (14.3in).

As a child, the world's tallest man was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor that caused his body to grow uncontrollably, leaving him with difficulty walking, not to mention fitting in.

Although the previous record holder, Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyk, reportedly measured 8 feet 5.5 inches (2.57 meters), Guinness said he was stripped of his title when he declined to let anyone confirm his height.

Robert Pershing Wadlow (1918 - 1940) was and is the tallest human being ever recorded. He reached 8' 11.1" (272 cm) in height and 490 pounds (222.26 kg) in weight before his death at the age of 22. His height was due to an overactive pituitary gland. Robert Wadlow was born in Alton, Illinois on February 22 1918. At the time he weighed only 8' 6 ounces (3.8 kg). He attracted attention due to his rapid growth when all his four siblings grew at a more normal speed. At the age of 13 he became the world's tallest Boy Scout with a height of 7'4 (224 cm). At age 18 his height was 8'4 (254 cm) and he weighed 390 pounds (177 kg).

His size 37 shoes cost $100.00 a pair. At the age of 20 Wadlow signed a contract with the International Shoe Company; he received free shoes in exchange for a promotional tour. He traveled all around the USA with his father. In 1936 he enrolled in Shurtleff College with the intention of studying law.By 1937 he had exceeded the previous records. However, his size begun to take its toll. He had to keep braces in his feet to walk and had little sensation in them. On July 4 1940 Wadlow was taken ill in Manistee, Michigan; a faulty brace had caused a blister and bad infection. Doctors treated him with blood transfusions and emergency surgery but his fever got worse. On July 15 1940 he died in his sleep. He was buried in Alton on July 19. In 1984 his hometown raised a bronze statue in his memory. His family destroyed his belongings lest they become collectables.

It was confirmed for the 2008 Guinness Book of World Records that Leonid Stadnik is the tallest 'still living' man in the world. Leonid Stadnik lives an isolated life, has trouble finding clothes and shoes that fit and no longer expects any help from bureaucrats, the Ukrainian said in an interview.

Tallest man in America named Igor Vovkovinskiy

At a towering 7 feet 8 1/3 inches, Igor Vovkovinskiy now holds top honors as the tallest man in the United States, according to Guinness World Records officials.

The 27-year-old Minnesota resident -- who sports size 24 10-E shoes -- one-upped previous record-holder George Bell, passing the 7-foot-8 deputy sheriff by a third of an inch.

Taking trips when you are 7 foot 8.33 inches tall can be a challenge but Igor Vovkovinskiy left his Minnesota home for the New York City set of the Dr. Oz Show to be named the tallest man in the United States by the Guinness World Records this week.

Vovkovinskiy took the record set by Virginia deputy sheriff George Bell by just a third of an inch.

Vovkovinskiy came to the US from the Ukraine as a 7-year-old with his mother Svetlana twenty years ago.

The young man with a size 24 10-E shoe faces daily challenges living in a world where the average man is just 5 foot 10 inches tall. Just sitting at a desk at the Minnesota School of Business can be a task for the paralegal studies student. Upon accepting the Guinness World Record, Igor said in a press release obtained by Digital Journal, "It feels good to finally have proof that I am the Tallest Man in America. Everyone is always asking me if I'm certain that I'm the tallest and I was never able to prove it. Now that I have this certificate to hang on my wall, I could finally show it!" "Igor had been on our radar for a while, so we were eager to measure him and see if he was, in fact, the Tallest Living Man in America," said Guinness World Records adjudicator Danny Girton Jr. "Following stringent Guinness World Record guidelines on measurement, we're pleased to confirm that Igor is now a part of record-breaking history."

Yao Defen (Chinese: 姚德芬; pinyin: Yáo Défēn) of China, (born 15 July 1972) is claimed to be the tallest woman in the world (2.33 m; 7 ft 8 in). The Guinness Book of World Records said American Sandy Allen was the world's tallest woman until Allen's death on August 13, 2008, but dispute Defen's claim. She weighs 200 kg (440 lbs) and has size 26 (UK) / 78 (EU) feet. Her gigantism is due to a tumor in her pituitary gland.


Early life

Yao Defen was born to poor farmers in the town of Liuan in the Anhui province of Shucheng County. At birth she weighed 6.16 pounds. At age 3 she was eating more than three times the amount of food that other three-year-olds were eating. When she was 11 years old she was about 6 foot 2 inches tall. She was 6 foot 8 inches tall by the age of 15.

The story of this "woman giant" began to spread rapidly after she went to see a doctor at age 15 for an illness. After that, many companies attempted to train her to be a sports star. The plans were abandoned, however, because Defen was too weak. Because she is illiterate, since 1992 Yao Defen has been forced to earn a living by traveling with her father and performing.

Yao Defen's giant stature was caused by a large tumor in the pituitary gland of her brain, which was releasing too much growth hormone and caused excessive growth in her bones. Six years ago, a hospital in Guangzhou Province removed the tumor, and she stopped growing.

The tumor returned and she was treated in Shanghai in 2007, but was sent home for 6 months with the hope that medication would reduce her tumor enough to allow surgery. The second surgery was never performed due to lack of funds.

In 2009 TLC devoted a whole night show to her. She suffered from a fall in her home and had internal bleeding of the brain. She recovered and felt some happiness after a visit from the world's tallest man, also living in China.


Medical help

A British television programme filmed a documentary on her and helped raise money so she could get proper medical care. They did measure her and according to the documentary she's 7ft 8in tall. Two leading doctors in acromegaly agreed to help Yao. She was taken to a nearby city hospital, where imaging procedures revealed that a small portion of her tumor, removed many years before, still remained, causing continuing problems, including weakening vision as it pressed against her optic nerve. She returned home, then was admitted for a month under observation in the larger Shanghai Ruijin Hospital, and given dietary supplements. In that hospital, her growth hormone was greatly slowed down, although it is still a problem. Upon her return home to her mother and brother, she was able to walk with crutches, unassisted by others, and was given a six-month supply of medicines and supplements in hopes of improving her condition enough to undergo surgery.


Acromegaly

Yao currently suffers from hypertension, heart disease, poor nutrition, and osteoporosis. Acromegaly often results from a tumor within the pituitary gland that causes excess growth hormone secretion. As a result, the body's features become enlarged. It can also delay the onset of puberty as is the case with Yao. She has no secondary sex characteristics. Potential complications without necessary surgery include blindness and eventually premature death.

She lives near her mother (who is only 4 ft 8 inches tall) in a small village in rural China.
